Congratulations to Shel Silva, who has been given an Outstanding Contribution Award from Bournemouth University Doctoral College, for showcasing her motorcycle collision prevention research and the collaboration with DocBike and Bournemouth University.

It is important to recognise this crucial motorcycle collision prevention research would not be possible without the joint funding and support from both DocBike and Bournemouth University.

Research collaborations such as funding PhD research, are an effective and cost-efficient way to carry out research. This type of collaboration allows researchers to gain the best support from both organisations. In this instance, DocBike bring an impartial attitude; we just want to know what works to save motorcyclists lives and this allows our researchers to ask questions freely. DocBike also provide the necessary knowledge of motorcycle collisions and access to key organisations who collect crash data, such as Dorset Road Safety Partnership and the Trauma Audit Research Network. Bournemouth University provide a rigorous academic support framework for the PhD researcher via the Doctoral College and allow access to specialist equipment such as the eye-tracker used by Shel.

It is a win/win situation; where Shel is researching a subject she is clearly passionate about and both Bournemouth University and DocBike benefit from unique research into motorcycle collision prevention to save bikers’ lives. DocBike have a 10-year research strategy and it is hoped that there will be long-term collaboration with Bournemouth University with more places for PhD researchers.

There are a multitude of anticipated outcomes from this current research. Such as informing motorcyclists how to improve their visual search strategies to identify hazards quickly, giving them time to appropriately respond to the hazard. It is important to note that DocBike will never order motorcyclists how to ride. Instead, DocBike provide information gained from evidence-based research about how to upskill to become a better rider and avoid collisions.

Research and evidence-base form the cornerstones of everything that we do at DocBike – Find out more on our website!
