Sensational Support for DocBike Dorset’s Ride Out

by | Oct 8, 2021 | DocBike UK, Dorset

We held our first charity ride out in Dorset on Sunday 26th September and what an amazing day it was!

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our ability to engage with motorcyclists during the past 18 months or so, we were delighted to hold our first official ride out in Dorset, which gave motorcyclists the opportunity to take part in one of the last ride outs this summer, before storing their bikes away for the winter months.

The Dorset DocBike crew had an early start to the day, with two separate teams heading off to The Churchill Arms in Alderholt and Henstridge Airfield on the Dorset/Somerset border, who very kindly hosted the start and end points of the ride out.

Despite the potential issues posed due to the fuel shortage, approximately 200 motorcyclists came out in force on the day, creating a fantastic display at The Churchill Arms on their arrival. The pub ensured that everyone was set for the day, by providing breakfast for those who wanted it and giving people the opportunity to chat whilst signing in for the event.

Following a foggy start to the morning, the weather cleared to provide perfect conditions for the ride out to start at 10.30am, with Dorset riders Dr Ian Mew and Critical Care Paramedic Mark Williams, leading the convoy through Dorset’s country roads, and Paramedic Rob Walker bringing up the rear.

After completing the 30-mile route, motorcyclists received a warm welcome at Henstridge Airfield with a variety of stalls, music, hot food and of course the grand raffle which had some incredible prizes up for grabs.

We also received a special visit from the critical care team at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (based at Henstridge Airfield), who gave attendees the opportunity to look around the aircraft and to learn more about the charity’s life-saving work.

The atmosphere was wonderful on the day and the event gave everyone the opportunity to catch up with friends, old and new, whilst raising vital funds for the charity. It was fantastic to see so many motorcyclists from a wide variety of backgrounds attend, who were keen to learn about the work of DocBike providing roadside critical care, and helping others know what to do if they come across a crash involving a bike, car or pedestrian, by signing up for a free BikerDown course.

After an amazing day filled with smiles and laughter, the Dorset DocBike crew reflected on the sensational support that was shown by those who attended or supported the event, which resulted in an incredible £3,000 being raised in aid of the charity!

Dr Ian Mew, Co-Founder and Trustee of DocBike said:

“We are blown away with the amount of support that we have received for our first ride out in Dorset. Our immense thanks go to The Churchill Arms and Henstridge Airfield for hosting the start and end points of the ride out, to all the local businesses who generously donated prizes for our grand raffle, the stall holders, army of volunteers and marshals, our partners and of course to everyone who registered to take part, for helping to make our first ride out such a success.

“Our aim is to do all that we can to help keep bikers on two wheels and to prevent motorcycle collisions from happening in the first place. The funds raised from this event will be a great help towards the charity’s operational costs and enable us to be there for fallen bikers when they need us the most.”

We are pleased to confirm that we are planning to hold another charity ride out in Dorset next year, so keep an eye on our website and social media channels, where we look forward to sharing more information with you soon.
