Dorset DocBike crew get out for the first time since COVID-19
After much preparation, risk assessments and a degree of cost, the Dorset DocBike crew were able to make it out to West Bay this August bank holiday Sunday.
A very popular ‘natural’ hang out for bikers, the volunteers were able to engage with bikers in West Bay and talk about how to save a life by signing up to a free BikerDown course, whilst helping to encourage social distancing; the day was a phenomenal success!
As usual, bikers from a wide variety of backgrounds were present and all were keen to learn about the work of DocBike providing roadside critical care, but also about helping others to know what to do if they come across a crash involving a bike, car or pedestrian.
Discussing how to recognise when a car is about to pull out on you and what you can do about it was a very popular topic, with many bikers interested in finding out more through their local BikeSafe course.
The DocBike was poised for action, online with critical care skills and ready to be deployed as required across the Dorset area but thankfully, no life-saving skills were required; testament to the sensible riding of those in the area on a busy bank holiday weekend.
To ensure that we could engage with bikers in West Bay and also conform with guidelines from the Government, Health and Safety Executive and Fundraising Regulator, the charity needed to purchase a range of materials and equipment, including hand sanitiser, tables and signage. Although this came at a cost, we feel it is important not to hide indoors and also vital for us to get back out on the streets to engage with bikers who are returning to the road. This was certainly very well-received by the biking community!
You can help us to continue our life-saving work! Just £5 will help towards our costs to get out and about to engage with bikers.
